Das Racist "Sit Down, Man" Mixtape

I've been feeling like it's time to serve up something a littler hardier for your ears to crunch on, so here is something semi new and p tasty. You may remember Das Racist from the mind-numbingly catchy "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell," but don't write them off yet.

They're really pretty good. I was reticent to take them seriously myself, 'cause I can only take "joke rap" so far, but it turns out they have really good production and some meaty raps (with a healthy peppering of jokes, of course).

If you're not ready to commit to the whole mixtape, I get it. Here's a track to taste, which reminds me of one of my favorite SNL skits (Kristen Wiig as Judy Grimes) and samples the theme song from Days of Our Lives (YES).

Jil Sander Spring 2011

I have a lot of thoughts and feeling about the Jil Sander Spring Collection... but suffice to say it was among my favorites of the season.
Jil Sander SS 2011, spot necklace, rose loofa, pear jar, Lulu Guiness rose bag, fluorescent colored pencils, Jonathan Adler Chair.
In columns left to right: Sander SS11, Capuchine bullet vase, Staple sweat dress, Adler charger plate, Sander SS11, Adler zig zag throw, Work sleeve dress, Adler brasilia bowls.

El Guincho "Bombay"

This video is arguably even more epic than the Duck Sauce video I posted yesterday. It's kind of like watching Purple Magazine, if Purple Magazine was a music video. Lots of T&A, babes, and high-waisted jeans.

The song is super fun but still on the sophisticated side, using steel drums in a not annoying way, and not just for the sake of using them. I definitely suggest you give it a listen, it might just perk up your rainy morning. And I even have a download link for you today!

NEW MUSIC Duck Sauce "Barbra Streisand"

Those of you who know me personally might know that I'm semi-obsessed with Barbra Streisand. So when my boyf presented me with a video in her name, my interest was piqued.
And rewarded!
I've been vaguely aware of Duck Sauce for a bit because they're signed to Fools Gold, but had never taken the time to check them out. Mistake! This song is disco house fabulosity, and the video is full of a lot of very beautiful people and some beautiful famous people too.

Turn it up and dance, people!

Moschino, what are you doing to me?

I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Moschino, but this collection was just too much to die for. Polka dots and stripes, my biggest weaknesses after Pop Chips and Olde E.

I'm still not sure if anyone actually reads this so I'm going to keep using it as a place to play with photoshop and try new kinds of posts until someone says "this sucks" or "do this more." So.

Prada Part II

More spring Prada... this was such a wonderful, refreshing collection. I love the flared skirts and stripes and all the bright colors, and the furs are psychadelically amazing. Perhaps not something we'll see on too many people outside of Bryan Boy and Anna dello Russo, but definitely a collection we can all draw some inspiration from.

Bottom row, left to right: Cocktail monkeys; Sephora by OPI caliente coral nail polish; Sephora nail polish; Elva Fields necklace; Paloma Barceló espadrilles.

My favorite look from Prada's Spring 2011 collection... plus the Cheshire cat.

More fall love...

I've been wanting to improve my photoshopping skills, so I threw this together while watching Community, 30 Rock, and The Office tonight.

Today I discovered two really incredible design blogs (DesignLoveFest and Mrs. Lilien) that I'm already completely head over heels addicted to. I think these ladies have set the blog bar seriously high, and I'm hoping to improve my own here so bear with me.

These are just a few of the things I'm dreaming of for fall...
1. 3.1 Phillip Lim jacket; 2. Michael Kors hobo bag; 3. Le Corbusier chair; 4. 7 For All Mankind jeans; 5. Giles & Brother bracelet; 6. Burberry Prorsum bracelet; 7. Prada bootie; 8. Johnny Walker Blue; 9. Pendleton Meets Opening Ceremony blanket.

I'm loving it...

This post is NOT for die hard movie musical lovers.

As the title states, if you're a die hard movie musical fan, this post is probably not going to blow your mind. Or will it?

That being said.

Ante and I were watching Family Guy re-runs tonight when we caught this: A scene Peter and the New England Patriots performing "Shipoopi," a pretty nonsensical and ridiculous musical number that clearly seem written for Family Guy audiences.
(please excuse the shitty vid, no Fam Guy clips online! boo!)

Dang, well if you actually watched that REALLY bad quality vid, now enjoy this... I asked Ante if he thought it could possibly be from a real musical, but we both agreed it was probably an FG original. Then I did some Googling and came upon this:

It's just too good to be true. "Shipoopi," as performed in The Music Man, made in 1962.

ENJOY.

Jojo "Can't Take That Away From Me" Mixtape

I must thank Sherrod first of all, for linking me to this mixtape. I always really liked Jojo and was bummed that her career never took off – though I'm pretty sure she has that very premature episode of "Cribs" to blame for that, in some small way. Looks like she is on the comeback trail; she was spotted front row at a handful of shows at NYFW and is causing a buzz on the blog circuit.

If this mixtape is any indication, 19 year old Jojo has certainly grown up since the days of "Baby It's You" and "Leave (Get Out)." Her voice is pretty incredible, at times recalling Christina Aguilera in her prime (circa "Genie in a Bottle" and "What a Girl Wants), and at others serving up a younger version of Jill Scott on songs like "All I Want Is Everything."

Here's a little refresher: Jojo then...

Jojo now... This song, "In The Dark" is pretty different from what we're hearing on the radio right now (I think), not to draw yet another "sounds like," but think 90s Madonna/Janet Jackson/drum machine goodness. I've been listening on repeat for at least 30 minutes by now...

And here's a link to download the mixtape. Though the songwriting leaves a little to be desired at times, the vocals more than make up for it. Enjoy!

Music from Fashion Week, Omarion, etc.

Hey kiddos,

So fashion week is a wrap and boy was it a doozy. I had such an incredible time running around to shows and pretending I'm important, seeing gorgeous, inspiring clothes and tear-jerkingly incredible shoes.
Yesterday I went to Robert Verdi's Luxe Laboratory and enjoyed a little break from the madness to unwind, and met DJ Mia Moretti (totally rad chick). I had seen her spin at Lollapalooza and saw her around fashion week at tons of shows, so it was great to finally connect with her. She may be doing some fun stuff with StyledOn soon, so stay tuned for that. In the meantime, I'll leave you with one of my favorite songs from the runways this week.

Bjork and Dirty Projectors is an almost-too-obvious-collaboration, but I guess that's what makes it so good. Can't remember which show featured it but I'm looping it in the office today.

Also, had to show you some snaps of Omarion and what he wore at Fashion Week... seems like I saw him at every other show I went to, and he was 'fitted out to the nines!

What do you think of these looks?

P.S. He's about 5'6" just fyi.

"Catfish"

Half of the people who read this blog have already heard my spiel about "Catfish" (out in theaters on September 17th)... but I can't remember the last time I have been so anxious to see a movie. Oh wait, Step Up 3D... and Step Up 2 The Streets...

The text in the trailer is a little confusing, but basically this movie was intended to be a documentary short, but when the main character Nev meets the girl he has a crush on but has only known via facebook, some kind of crazy shit goes down. It's not a horror movie (no cannibals or 400 lb. men in diapers pretending to be 18 year old babes), it sounds like it's just a super exciting/emotional story.

Seriously though it has taken every ounce of self restraint I have not to read the spoilers for this. Watch the trailer and tell me you aren't psyched.

Chris Brown "Deuces" featuring Tyga and Kevin McCall

After all those grand declarations about how I'm bring the Roni back, I realized that the reason it fell off in the first place was because I didn't have time to keep up with it. Which I still don't. But here's a little something to tide you over...

Leaving the Chris Brown debate to the side for now (though believe me, I have a lot of thoughts on the issue), lets just say that while what he did was inexcusable, I'll still take his music at face value.

I've been really feeling this song lately. I don't know much about Kevin McCall, but Tyga is part of Young Money and is also cousin to Travis McCoy whose song "Billionaire" (as predicted) was pretty big this summer.

ANYWAYZ. I'm thinking about doing the ABCs of Hip Hop (inspired by Casey's ABCs of Fall Fashion), assuming I get my act together and start blogging more. Fashion Week is days away so it may have to go on hold for now, but it seems like it would be a fun project.

Also... the banner. Yeah I don't really know why I did it that way I think I got a little carried away, but it'll work for now. Happy Tuesday people.
